Volubilis was in the epicentre of this cultural scene, located in the heart of the glamorous Golden Mile. Its original owner had a passion for collecting and showcasing vintage treasures, and the store quickly became a haven for antique collectors and enthusiasts.
Over the years, Volubilis changed hands and came under the ownership of another antique dealer, who understood the cultural significance of the building and its history. However, it wasn’t until much later that the building underwent its most recent transformation.
Contemporary vibe rooted in history
A group of entrepreneurs discovered the space and saw its potential for becoming a co-working space. They were inspired by the building’s eclectic energy, rich history, and unique character. The name Volubilis itself is a nod to the ancient Roman city of the same name, located in present-day Morocco. The founders were inspired by the city’s vibrant cultural and commercial life and saw parallels between Volubilis and the vision of the co-working space they were creating.
The new owners were careful to maintain the essential character of the building while totally modernising both inside and out. Going East, the architectural studio brought on board to develop the project, perfectly grasping their brief and reflecting the creative vision for the space.
They kept the exposed brick walls and large windows that reflect its past as an antique store. They also retained pieces from the original owner, La Fábrica de Hielo, with carefully chosen vintage furniture and eclectic artwork to pay homage to the building’s previous incarnation and create a welcoming and inspiring environment for their co-working space.
In addition to the vintage elements, the space features modern amenities such as soundproof booths and ergonomic chairs to create a comfortable and functional workspace. The result is a space that seamlessly blends the past with the contemporary.
Volubilis’ journey is a testament to the power of thoughtful restoration and the importance of preserving the soul of the past as well as representing Marbella’s evolution as a town. It reflects the transformation from a small, sleepy fishing village to a bustling tourist destination, while retaining its cultural heritage and creative spirit. Today, Volubilis continues to be a hub of creativity and collaboration, where entrepreneurs and professionals can find an inspiring space for anyone looking to work, collaborate, or simply soak up some of Marbella’s creative energy.
